Kitchens – the heart of the home – 6 July 2011

We all think of the kitchen as the heart of the home, and it can be a major factor in determining the re-sale value of your home.
Kitchens have come a long way since the days when they were just used for cooking and doing the laundry (remember wheeling the twin-tub out?!) Nowadays, kitchens have to work much harder and often functon as an extra living room for the whole family.

As such, they demand much more thought and a carefully designed and decorated kitchen is a definate selling point if you decide to move. A kitchen make over doesn’t have to break the bank, there are plenty of things you can do to make the most of what you’ve got and these are our favourite tips:

  • Keep it in the style of the rest of the house
  • Replace tired-looking worktops then invest in a decent chopping-board to protect the surface
  • Ditto tiles and flooring!
  • De-clutter the counter tops and hide portable appliances (apart from the kettle and toaster!)
  • Replace (or paint) cupboard doors and drawer fronts
  • Get the lighting right and zone it so you can alter the mood of your room. Don’t forget to get expert advice if you go a step further and start to think about moving walls!
