Ensure your home is ready for winter – Sept 2011

The season of mists and mellow fruitfulness…

Well it’s true! Summer is waning now for another year, but we have the beautiful, cool autumn to look forward to.

Best bits about the autumn are; apple-scrumping, blackberry-foraging, crispy leaf-rustling, bonfire-lighting, footy-season, children back to school, sloe gin-making, pickling, freezer-stocking, draught-discovery, window-condensation…oh, and it was all sounding so lovely…

Now is the time of year when you just can’t put off home maintenance any longer.

You really must make sure everything is ship-shape before the cold weather sets in with a vengeance; and if you do nothing else at all – at least check that your loft insulation is thick enough, and keep the heat inside this autumn and winter!

According to the Energy Saving Trust the recommended depth for mineral wool insulation is 270mm (however there are other materials which require different depths.) In an uninsulated home a quarter of your heat is lost through the roof. Insulating your loft is a simple and effective way to reduce your heating bill and you don’t even have to do it yourself!
