70 years of brilliant building! – 8 June 2011
The Federation of Master Builders was established in 1941 so for 70 years our members have been building Britain.
70 years ago, in 1941, the Federation of Master Builders (FMB) was founded and since then FMB members up and down the country have been building and maintaining the UK.
British homes have changed a lot in the 70 years since the FMB started. Many of the homes and buildings built in the 1940s (and before) are still in use today but many will have been changed and adapted as lifestyles have changed. The photos above demonstrate the changes our homes have undergone, the kitchen has gone from small, utilitarian, functional space in the 1940’s to a large, sleek, hub of the home used for everything from traditional cooking and washing to eating, socialising and watching TV.
And it’s not just lifestyles that have changed. The FMB started as a means of support and protection for small building companies to ensure they had fair access to the immense amount of emergency repair work needed for London’s bomb damaged properties. Since then the FMB has grown to become the largest trade association in the UK construction industry, with members and offices across the UK.
The FMB still works to protect and support its members but as the sign of building quality it also helps homeowners by providing them with a way to find a local builder. All FMB members have to meet our membership criteria which includes passing inspections, providing references, having relevant insurances and passing various financial checks.
